Peloponnese / Monemvasia

When you are planning a trip to the Peloponnese area in Greece make sure to put Monemvasia on your list of must visits!

Monemvasia is a small village build on a rocky peninsula, which is only accesable via a long small bridge that brings you from the mainland of the province of Lakonia to the gates of the city of Monemvasia. We were very excited to visit this place because of it’s beautiful Italian inspired architecture, the amazing views from the top of the village and the magical almost fairytail like character.

Inside the walls there is a vierity of traditional Greek hotels where you can spend the night. We booked a room at Malvasia hotel, they have many different rooms with all their own charm and character. We spend the night at one of their ‘cave’ rooms, very romantic and cozy. Also, we can highly recommend their breakfast buffet; a mix of traditional Greek pastries, fresh fruits, salads and a variety of cheeses and sides to taste. We want to have a breakfast like this everyday!

Definitely bring your camera or your appetite to take pictures because when you wander around the little streets you will experience the ancient beauty of this well-preserved place. The beauty goes on when you climb up towards the highest point of the rock where you can experience an amazing view over the village and the sea.

The best time to pay a visit to Monemvasia is in the low season. There is basically one mainstreet where almost all the restaurants, bars and hotels are located on. During high season this street is totally packed out and it will make your visit a lot less pleasant. Some of the bars and restaurants at the mainstreet have a nice terrace or rooftop at the back overlooking the sea. We went to Oinomelo for a romantic dinner, a nicely decorated restaurant serving Greek traditional dishes served in a more modern style. They have amazing homemade honeywine which you can enjoy after dinner with a dessert.

At night the citywalls are lit and when you look up to the sky you will see a dark sky filled with magical stars, and with a full moon this picture is even more complete!
